Kandy is the second largest district in Sri Lanka that promotes sports. Such activities are very popular, especially among school children. However, there is a shortage of grounds to cater to the school children who are very eager to carry out their activities and reach higher levels.
In the early days there was only one ground in Bogambara that was used for many sports throughout the year. Later there was Asigirya, Katugastota, Lake View and Police grounds where cricket could be played.
When Bogambara was under the care of the Municipal Council the rates to hire the ground was reasonable, but today it is very high.
With Trinity, Dharmaraja, St. Anthony’s and Sri Rahula having their own grounds the other schools have to go out of Kandy to play their encounters.
The University of Peradeniya have grounds for tennis, cricket, hockey and athletics. They have a separate ground for rugby and football. At one time the Peradeniya turf wicket was classified among the best in the country and helped cricket in a big way.
At one time the Police ground was hired for all sports, but now the first preference is given to cricket and a little bit of hockey, but not for football.
The Ministry of Sports of the Central Province is now dissolved. Even when they were in power nothing happened. They were seen only as chief guests at events.
