No SLFP and JO pow-wow yet

14 October, 2018

Joint Opposition sources said yesterday that no official discussion had been initiated so far with the SLFP ruling faction to form a caretaker government. If there is any decision to form a caretaker Government at all, it should come from SLFP Leader President Maithripala Sirisena himself, but he has not yet taken any such initiative so far. In case, the President takes a decision, the JO would certainly respond to it, JO Parliamentarian Vasudeva Nanayakkara told the Sunday Observer yesterday.

Responding to media speculations that a group of JO MPs are opposed to the decision of forming a caretaker Government, MP Nanayakkara said there is no opposition as such within the JO group. The JO would express its stance at the appropriate time. At present, the JO is pursuing its political agenda and has decided to demonstrate its opposition to the Government particularly for its economic policy prescriptions and exert pressure on the Government to provide immediate relief to the people.

Asked about the decisions taken at the JO’s Parliamentary Group meeting held last week, MP Nanayakkara said nothing specific was discussed and it was a formal JO Parliamentary Group meeting centered on the current political landscape in Parliament and the country at large as well as the prevalent crisis within the Government.
