All political parties now appear to support the call to hold the upcoming Provincial Council elections under the former electoral system with former President Mahinda Rajapaksa also agreeing to back the decision at a recent meeting held with several party leaders.
Attending the meeting was the leader of the National Democratic Front Mano Ganeshan, leader of the Muslim Congress Rauf Hakeem and Eelam People’s Democratic Party (EPDP) leader Dougal Devananda while Dallas Alahapperuma, Udaya Gammanpila and Susil Premajayantha represented the JO.
“The former President voiced his support to hold the elections according to the former system” Ganesan said when contacted by the Sunday Observer. A group of MP’s had previously requested Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to hold the upcoming elections under the old system while he had in turn asked the group to gain the support of the JO as the move would require a two thirds support of the Parliament, Ganesan said.
