The Dialog President’s Gold Cup Volleyball Championship the most prestigious tournament of the year is to commence in mid August and will come to a close in mid December.
The Championship will start off with the Divisional, District and Provincial levels before it reaches the national level tourney. The finals are scheduled to be played in Galle this year with the intention of promoting the sport in outstations. These details were disclosed to the media at a press briefing held in Colombo last Tuesday in the presence of Minister of Power and Renewable Energy and President and Volleyball Ranjith Siyambalapitiya. Dilog Axiata has been in the forefront as the main sponsor for the past 12 years and it will be continued in the future too said Harsha Samaranayake the General Manager Brand and Media Promotion Dialog Axiata PLC at the briefing. The tournament Committee Chairman SLVBF Dhanapala Jayapathma addressing the media said that this year the tournament will be played in two categories for men and women Under 22 and Senior.
The under 22 category is the latest addition to the tournament he said. With the addition of this category the organizers expect over 4000 teams to participate in both categories. As in Previous year’s the tournament will be conducted in three stages before the national level which is expected to be held on December 14-15. The winners will go away with Dialog President’s Trophy and cash awards. In addition to the main Awards there will special awards for Best Player, Best Spiker, Best Setter and Most Valuable Player of the Championship.
