Schools knock-out rugby played to depleted stands

24 June, 2018

Many rugby followers are frowning on the on-going Milo inter school knock-out rugby tournament as very few spectators were seen at the venue at the Sugathadasa Stadium, an out-of-the-way arena with little or no atmosphere as far as rugby is concerned.

It has been quite a contrast to the days when the Premadasa trophy tournament was worked off where 70 percent of the venue was packed.

The reason given by the conductors of the tournament is security but questions have been raised whether it is a law and order issue or money-saving gimmick as the Sugathadasa stadium is one of the cheapest venues compared to the rest.

“How come the Royal Complex ground or the Race Course ground was overlooked. These are two of the most secure venues in the country if the concern is security”, said one irate fan who witnessed yesterday’s semi final between defending champs St. Joseph’s College and Kingswood College.

St. Peter’s College are listed to meet Wesley College in the second semi final today at the Sugathadasa Stadium.
