3 June, 2018

Investigations into the assassination of Ranjan Silva, father of national cricketer Dhananjaya Silva has been handed over to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID). According to Police spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara, this was done on the orders of IGP Pujith Jayasundara.

“Additional investigation teams from the Mirihana special crimes investigation unit and several other units to assist the CID have also been deployed,” he said. Ranjan Silva (62), a Councillor of the Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia Municipal Council was killed on May 24 near his house on Gnanendra Road, Ratmalana when he along with two others were set on by three unidentified individuals who opened fire on him with a weapon, later identified as a T65.

Police suspecting that there maybe underworld connections to the killing are narrowing their investigative focus on drug kingpin and underworld figure, Gonakovila Anju. Police sources say the death could have been the result of a revenge killing ordered by the underworld figure.

Police protection will be provided to the residence of late Ranjan de Silva for a week.
