Due to the heavy rains prevailing from last week, 21 deaths were reported and 153,712 people belonging to 40,017 families in 19 districts were affected, according to the Summary Situation Report published by the Disaster Management Center, yesterday (26). Further, two persons were reported missing and 10 were injured. The report further says approximately, 14,437 families in 10 districts have been evacuated into 265 welfare centers due to flood and landslide risks. There is a total of 105 full housing damages and 4,708 partial damages recorded.
Also, the report states that the National Disaster Relief Services Center (NDRSC) has provided Rs. 38.66 million cash allocations to 12 District Secretaries to address the immediate needs of the affected populations.
The report further says DMC is co-ordinating with military agencies for better response interventions and NDRSC is undertaking needs assessment at local levels, especially in safety centers.
“ A Navy rescue team was able to safely rescue a mother and a three month old child in Purichchikulam, Puttalam. A few areas in Mahawewa has been submerged and communities are helping people for the mobilisation,” the report says.
Further, Kalu Ganga, Maha Oya, Attanagalu Oya is at flood level due to continuous rains, although water levels of main rivers are gradually receding. Landslide warnings issued to Kegalle, Kalutara, Galle, Ratnapura, Badulla, Kandy, Matale, Colombo, Kurunegala and Nuwara Eliya areas by the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO), remain in effect.
