JO-SLFP pow-wow continues : President to take final decision

18 February, 2018

The SLFP faction in the Government said that it is up to the President to take a final decision whether to form a SLFP-led Government or not and added that discussions between the SLFP and the Joint Opposition (JO) are still continuing.

The JO and the SLFP hope to complete their ongoing discussions within the next two days and reach a finality to form a Government, JO Leader Dinesh Gunawardena told the Sunday Observer yesterday.

He said the SLFP has decided to put an end to the MoU signed with the UNP. At present, the Prime Minister has no mandate to govern according to the parliamentary approval that was given based on the MoU signed between the SLFP and the UNP.

He said the UNP and the SLFP say that they are going to form their own Governments.

The JO has already extended its support for a SLFP-led UPFA Government.

The contradiction between the SLFP and the JO emerged because we didn’t want the SLFP to function under a UNP Prime Minister. Therefore, the JO decided to extend its support to form a SLFP-led Government. Meanwhile, a veteran SLFP Minister in the Government said that no finality has been reached so far to form a SLFP-led Government. It is up to the President to take a final decision whether to form a SLFP Government or not.
