Peterites beat their traditional rivals St.Joseph’s convincingly and comprehensively for the third consecutive year by 3 goals to 1, in the 27th Annual Joe - Pete Soccer Encounter played at CR & FC grounds recently.
The entire game was dominated by the much talented Peterite outfit. This annual soccer encounter is one of the oldest Soccer Big Matches in the school football circle. At the 25th Silver Jubilee ‘Battle of the Saints’ Soccer Encounter played in the year 2015, which was also won by the Peterites, a new trophy was introduced in honour of the two legendary Rectors of both schools. The trophy is dedicated to Very Rev. Fr. Joe E. Wickremasinghe and Very Rev. Fr. Stanley Abeyasekara, both of whom respectively at St. Peter’s College, Colombo 04 and at St. Joseph’s College, Colombo 10 were Rector’s approximately for 17 years.
The Peterites were led by Veeriah Vasikaran and the talented Daniel Magrath scored 2 goals and the gifted Mohamed Shabeer scored a goal that sealed the Peterite victory.
With this third consecutive win the points tally of the series stands in favour of St. Peter’s College as 15 and St. Joseph’s College 11. One match in the series was awarded as Joint Champions.
The Rector of St. Peter’s College, Rev. Fr. Trevor Martin and the Sports Coordinator Rev. Fr. Thilina Pathum were a tower of strength and a source of inspiration for the winners.
