President Maithripala Sirisena said that the message he wants to project on the 66th Anniversary of the SLFP is that the people yearn for unstained politicians. “My resolve is to ensure that the SLFP is a party that provides such politicians to make the people’s dream a reality.”
Addressing the media on Wednesday, the President said he is totally dedicated and committed to build the SLFP as a clean, unstained, uncorrupt and principled party that provides leadership to the nation through honest and dedicated politicians.
“Although it is not an easy task as not only the body politic but also the entire social structure has broken down with corrupt practices, I am determined to fulfill this uphill task,” he said.
He said he will stress on this issue, as the SLFP marks its 66th anniversary today.
President Sirisena said unfortunately the educated youth in the country have no faith in the politicians and the system in the country because the social structure is corrupt and stained. He said this is as a direct result of the bad example set by the former regime.
“It is not easy to change the situation overnight per se. But we are doing our best to instill a clean political culture and a transparent system,” he stressed. “So far the UNP-SLFP led government has restored freedom and democracy in this country and won the confidence of the international community.”
“We are aware of the aspirations of the people who ushered in the unity government and we are committed to fulfill their dreams. This is the main point we want to stress at the SLFP convention, the President added. He was also confident about the SLFP continuing its agreement with the United National Party (UNP). Although the agreement between the two parties will end in December, he said the unity government will continue till 2020.
“The SLFP will discuss the agreement by December after which a decision will be made.”
