Fraudster arrested in Polgahawela

A 50-year-old resident of Katupotha was arrested by the Polgahawela Police in the Polpitiya area for defrauding several individuals under the promise of securing foreign employment opportunities for them. On questioning, the suspect had admitted to receiving cash from a large number of people according to the Police.

Illicit liquor brewer nabbed

A group of officers from the Peliyagoda Crimes Investigation Division nabbed an individual for brewing illicit liquor in the Divulapitiya area on Friday.

Acting on a tip off received the Police were able to confiscate 63 bottles of liquor amounting to 47, 250 milliliters brewed illegally along with one barrel of Goda used for the racket during the raid. The arrested suspect has been identified as a 37-year-old resident of Divulapitiya.

Pedestrian killed in Avissawella

An 18-year-old pedestrian was killed when she was struck down by a van traveling along the Dehiowita - Eheliyagoda road in Avissawella.

According to the Police, the driver of the van had lost control of the vehicle and had veered off the road resulting in the fatal accident which occurred on Friday.

The victim, identified as Malshika Sandaruwani succumbed to her injuries after being admitted to the Avissawella hospital.

Woman attempts suicide

A 23-year-old woman along with her two daughters aged 6 and 3 had tried to commit suicide by attempting to get struck down by the Colombo - Vavuniya express train near the Galgamuwa Railway station, the Police said.

According to the Police while all three had been seriously injured they have been transferred to the Anuradhapura Hospital for further treatment. Galgamuwa Police are investigating.
