The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) issued a warning alerting people living in the Nuwara Eliya, Kandy, and Kegalle districts, to be mindful of possible landslides due to heavy showers being experienced in the areas.
“We request the residents to evacuate immediately if any signs of landslides emerge,” Assistant Director of the DMC, Pradeep Kodippili said, adding that heavy rains are also being experienced in the Kegalle district. According to the Department of Meteorology, showers or thunder showers may occur in the Southern, Sabaragamuwa, North Western and Western Provinces today, Sunday, while showers are expected in the Central Province as well.
The Department has also predicted that rainfall of over 75mm may be experienced particularly in Kalutara, Galle, Matara, Ratnapura, Kegalle, Trincomalee, and Mullaitivu districts.
According to the weather report, fairly strong winds about 40-50 kmph can also be expected in the Southern province during the day.
The department has also warned that the deep and shallow sea area off the coast, extending from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo and Hambantota can be rough at times as the wind speed can increase up to 60 kmph.
