Poson Festival

25 June, 2017

The Poson Festival is held in Sri Lanka in the month of June and is celebrated by the Buddhists. The Poson festival is celebrated to mark the day when Mahinda Thera introduced Buddhism to Sri Lanka. During that period King Devanampiyatissa was the King. The King was hunting deer when he met Mahinda Thera, with six monks and an ascetic on the Mihintale rock in Anuradhapura. Mahinda Thera preached the Dhamma to King Devanampiyatissa.
On this day, people go to the temple and observe Sil and also engage in many religious activities. Some people go to Mihintale and worship the rock. People also have free food stalls known as Dansals. Pandals are erected and oil lamps are lit on this day. I like Poson festival very much because I am a Buddhist.
