 Sigiriya (Sinhagiriya)

is a beautiful national heritage site in Sri Lanka situated in the Central Province. Sigiriya is a gigantic rock. King Kashyapa, son of King Dathusena built a fortress on top of the hill. After King Dathusena, Prince Moggallana was the rightful heir. But Kashyapa wanted to be the King, and he usurped the throne.

Kashyapa fled to the forest to escape from Moggalana. The Sigiriya rock consisted of a palace, parks, ponds, fortresses and mirror walls. But now we can see only the ruins of the rock. In the past Sigiriya was known as ‘Sinhagiriya’. UNESCO listed it as a national heritage site in 1982. This is the eighth natural heritage.
