Stores hit by blaze in Mahiyangana

Two retail stores in Mahiyangana town were gutted by fire on Friday night, the Police said.

Acting on information received, the Police along with the officers of the Badulla Fire Brigade and townsfolk contained the fire. No lives were lost in the incident but the damage to property is yet to be estimated. According to the Police, the cause of fire is not known. Mahiyangana Police are carrying out further investigations.

Youth killed in accident

A 17-year-old youth was killed in Piliyandala on Friday when he lost control of the motorbicycle he was travelling in, which resulted in a fatal crash. The motorbicycle along with the rider had crashed into a concrete pole along the road causing severe injuries to the youth.

According to the Police, he was pronounced dead on being admitted to the Piliyandala hospital. The deceased has been identified as Thewa Hettige Pasindu Madusanka of Palanwatta, Pannipitiya.

Man drowns in Mahaweli

A 38-year-old man from Badulla drowned while bathing in the Mahaweli river in the Halloluwa area, the Police said.

He had been bathing along with four others when the incident occurred. Police and Navy divers were brought in to search for the victim.

Child killed in wall collapse

A four-year-old child was killed when a wall collapsed on her in the Embilipitiya area on Friday.

According to the Police, the child had sustained serious injuries and was declared dead after being admitted to the Embilipitiya hospital. The Police have identified the deceased child as four- year-old Gimhani Gaweshana of Kiralawelkotuwa, Embilipitiya.
