‘Reach out and love nature’ from May 26-28:
The three day holiday camp of the Colombo District Scout Cubs organised by the Colombo District Headquarters will be held from May 26-28 at the Colombo Royal College premises.
Colombo District Scouts Commissioner Suren Wickrematilleke will provide the counselling and guidance to make the event a success.
The rationale behind organising a holiday camp for the Scout Cubs is basically to accustom these small children aged 7-11 years to attend to their daily duties on their own, to gain new experience away from their homes, improve mutual friendship and live as a community, provide entertainment mental satisfaction & physical fitness, cultivate sportsmenship and instil leadership qualities to accept victory and defeat able.
This time the theme of the camp is ‘Reach out and love nature’ which is meant to cultivate a sense of love for the nature in view of the denuding of forests and other threats to the environment.
The logo of the camp too symbolises the beauty of the nature.
The camps for the cubs are located in jungle areas such as Sinharaja, Kumana, Uda Walawa, Yala, Wilpattu
Around 1350 cubs will be accommodated in the above camps and 100 parents will also be there to look after them.
Assistant Scouts Commissioner Mrs. Evone with 6 camp leaders will ensure the smooth functioning of camps and realising the basic objectives of holding scouts holiday camps in addition to coordinating all activities.
A committee to ensure the security of the scouts in camps has also been appointed.
The organizing committee will make every attemps to raise awareness among the camp inmates on the gifts of nature such as birds, fauna & flora and fruits and eventually to make the event a complete success.
The law of the camp is to show utmost respect and obedience to the Scouts (cubs) teacher, Akela, become a useful person to the society and to ‘do better’.
