The activities of the Provincial Councils should be conducted with a consensus to meet the development goals of the country, President Maitripala Sirisena told the 33rd Chief Ministers Forum at the Cinnamon Lodge, Habarana, yesterday.
The President pointed out that the activities of the nine provincial councils in nine different ways has become an obstacle for the country to achieve its common development goals.
“If we need to achieve the common development goals of the country, we need to streamline the activities of Provincial Councils and strengthen the cooperation between the Councils and the central Government,” the President added.
He said the common masses of the country have been suppressed, as the people’s representatives have failed in fulfilling their responsibilities to the public.
They should fulfill their responsibilities to the people without fail. President Sirisena pointed out that irrespective of the Constitution, law and the powers vested with any institution, the effectiveness of that institution always depends on the characteristics of the person driving it.
“The tragedy that occurred due to the collapsing of the garbage mount in Meetotamulla is a classic example of the execution of political power in this country,” the President said.
