Rev. Sr. Shiamanie Mendis, the ‘Saviour’ of the deaf is no more. She passed away on April 5, 2017, after a distinguished career as a teacher, principal, audiotherapist and audiometrician. Graduating from the National University of Dublin, and Salford, Ireland and Victoria Manchester University, England in audiology, she dedicated her entire life to rehabilitate the hearing-impaired children. She also launched a scheme whereby monthly financial assistance was provided to poor families. She being a victim to cellulitis and other physical deformities was no bar to her life-long social service.
