
A special security plan has been implemented in Colombo and Kandy in view of May Day celebrations to be held tomorrow. The plans put in place under the direct supervision of IGP Pujith Jayasundara, will be overseen by Senior DIG Nandana Munasinghe in the Western Province and by Senior DIG Lalith Jayasinghe in the Central Province.
According to the Police Media Unit, around 4,765 police officers will be deployed for security and traffic management in Colombo, while another 3,500 officers will be deployed in Kandy town. Two teams of officers from the Special Task Force as well as the Sri Lanka Army will also be deployed to provide better protection.
¨A new camera system other than the existing CCTV cameras has also been installed in Colombo, DIG Jayakody said, adding that they have been installed in important areas around the city. Special surveillance vehicles too will be deployed.
The Police have also introduced a special traffic plan for tomorrow. Bus routes have been altered for the day. Buses on the 138 route, starting at Pettah will travel through James Peiris Mawatha, avoiding Union Place while it will be allowed to enter Colombo Fort through Ibbanwala junction and D. R. Wijewardene Mawatha. Similarly, alternative routes have also been made for the 154, 176 and 103 bus routes. According to the Police, motorists will not be allowed to park vehicles on 14 roads in Colombo tomorrow including Sangharaja Mawatha, Maligawatta Road, Macan Markar Mawatha. Many other road closures are also to be expected during the day while vehicular movement will be limited in others.
