Eating out is steadily becoming a part of city life. There are many aspects to choosing a venue. I came across a lesser known venue last week at the Platinum1 luxury apartments serviced by the Kingsbury Hotel. Located conveniently at Bagatale Road, Colombo-3 the serene restaurant sits on level 4.
The cream, yellow and brown interior accentuates an earth oriented aura- quite relaxing after witnessing the evening peak time traffic. The Grill also has an extended balcony along the poolside.
To get things started I ordered Breeze Blossom, and was bestowed with a very tropical looking glass that brought flashbacks of Florida! The mock tail contains a brilliant blend of fruit flavours.
I was quite surprised to discover an extensive choice of items on the menu, bearing in mind that the property is not a hotel.
Yet, the array of food was quite captivating.
The coconut crusted prawn starter with Japanese chili mayo was an absolute delight, cozily nestled on a bed of salad, garnished with olives. I decided to order a steak.
Cooking this prime cut of beef as per individual desire, of rare, medium or well done, is a complex challenge to any cook as each person’s perception of how their steak should taste varies (a steak is the best way to enjoy beef, as the local beef curry and other preparations often overcook the meat, subduing its natural taste with too many spices).
Having lived in Texas I honed my skills in appreciating a good steak.
I must admit that my steak was done to perfection- nicely expressing the charcoal laden crusty outer layer, maintaining a fine juicy inside that was tender to the bite.
This steak would be the envy of the cowboys from the Lonestar State! The accompanying vegetables were not overpowering the plate. Mashed potatoes are a mandatory accompaniment to steaks. Perhaps, a mild dash of cayenne pepper would have further enhanced the potatoes.
After consuming a steak, eating dessert is a serious decision one has to make. Yet, no meal is really complete without dessert. I chose an apple crumble.
The dish came to the table like an ornamental masterpiece- a real culinary gem. Presentation is vital to any dish, as the visual appeal triggers the mind to enjoy the food.
The crumble had a lovely mix of crunch and stickiness, the portion being just right for dinner.
The Bistro at Platinum 1 is a quiet haven waiting to be explored with the happy hour between 5.30pm to 7.30 pm, and is worth a visit.
