The National Flag of Sri Lanka depicts a gold coloured lion. She is holding a Kustane sword in its right fore paw and stands in front of a dark red background with four golden Bo leaves, one in each corner, and around the background is a yellow border. On its left are two vertical stripes of equal size in green and orange. The orange stripes are close to the lion. The red colour defines Sinhalese. The orange colour defines Tamils. The green colour defines Muslims. The flag is flown by the government on Independence Day on the 4th February.
