
The Department of Meteorology has announced that showers or thunder showers could be expected at times in different parts of the island during next few days.
According to the Department, Ampara, Batticaloa, Uva and Southern areas will receives rains while rain could also be expected elsewhere in the island except for the North, particularly after 2.00 pm while heavy falls exceeding more than 100 mm are also likely at some places.
Showers or thundershowers are also expected to occur at times in the sea area off the coast extending from Batticaloa to Colombo via Hambantota and Galle. According to the Department Winds will be Northeasterly in direction in the sea areas extending from Puttalam to Hambantota via Kankasanthurai, Trincomalee and Batticaloa. Winds will be variable in direction in the other sea areas while the department has also announced that seas can become rough during thundershowers due to sudden increase of the wind speed up to 60-70 kmph.
There may also be temporary localized strong winds during thundershowers. The Department has advised the general public to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by lightning during the time adding that misty conditions too can be expected at some places of the island during the mornings particularly in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and Southern Provinces.
On Saturday the highest rainfall of 22.5 mm was reported from Hiniduma, Galle.
