Police nab three robbers

Three people involved in a large number of robberies around the Mount Lavinia and Dehiwala Police divisions were arrested by the Athurugiriya Police on Friday over a robbery committed in the Malabe area on January 11.

According to the Police the trio had entered the house using weapons to scare the residents and made away with valuables. The Police apprehended the three people who are said to be residents of Ratmalana and Colombo 2 along with a trishaw used to commit the crime.

Officers of the Athurugiriya Police also recovered two illegal locally made guns, four gold chains, three sets of earrings, two rings, two pendants and three bangles.

Murder suspect surrenders

A suspect involved in the killing of an individual in the Avissawella area surrendered to the Police Public Assistance Centre at Police Headquarters on Friday. The man had attacked and struck the other over a dispute regarding precious stones which resulted in the latter’s death. The arrested 36-year-old is a resident of Husseiniya Watta, Ratnapura Road, Avissawella.

Counterfeit currency: Five nabbed

Five youth ranging from ages 18 to 29 who are said to be residents of Valvettithurai were arrested by the Nelliyadi Police on Friday afternoon for producing and the possession of counterfeit currency on a tip off received. Police were also able to recover a computer used for the racket along with one counterfeit note valued at Rs. 1000. Nelliyadi Police are carrying out further investigations into the incident.

One killed in Expressway collision

A person travelling in a van was killed when a container truck collided with it near the 66.5 Kilometer Mark on the Southern Expressway around 12.25 am yesterday. The van had been parked on the hard shoulder of the road at the time due to a break down when the container truck had collided with it.

One passenger in the van was killed while another has been admitted to the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital having suffered serious injuries. Six other passengers in the van are receiving treatment at the Elpitiya Hospital. Police have arrested the driver of the truck over the incident.
