TPA wants Govt to see new constitution through

25 December, 2016

The Tamil Progressive Alliance (TPA) will exert pressure on the government to ensure that the new constitution sees the light of day, says Minister Mano Ganeshan.

Minister Ganeshan told the Sunday Observer that the TPA is not happy with certain activities carried out by some people in the government. “The top priority with TPA supporting the victory of President Maithripala Sirisena was to find a solution through a new Constitution. There are certain issues that need to be prioritised. The number one issue is the national issue for which we are very much with the government of President Sirisena and Premier Wickremasinghe,” the minister said.

The national issue can only be solved through a new constitution. Minister Ganeshan represents TPAs interest at the steering committee for the drafting of the new constitution.

He said that the unity within the government is a must, to move forward and produce a new constitution. He also found fault with certain people violating the common code of the government and thereby putting the government into difficulties and hinder the formation of a political solution.

“We convinced TNA and they have been flexible as much as possible. Hence it is high time to come up with a solution now. Current issues such as economic crisis, Hambantota harbour related issues or the claimed so called ‘super ministry’ are all secondary for us our primary concern is the new constitution, but we are worried about some individuals who are acting in denying of this.”

“All we ask for is a pathway to bring about the new constitution, and for that the government should survive. My point is certain personalities especially from the SLFP of which president leads are acting against the interest of the government,” he said.

The Tamil Progressive Alliance was formed in June last year after a MoU was signed by Mano Ganesan, Palani Digambaran and Velusami Radhakrishnan, leaders of the DPF, NUW and UPCF

Mano Ganesan is the leader while Palani Digambaran and Velusami Radhakrishnan were appointed as Deputy Leaders of the Tamil Progressive Alliance.
