Despite diverse religious and cultural identity, the people respecting each other is what is unique in Sri Lanka, now on the path to lasting peace and reconciliation, said Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe addressing the inauguration of the Tourism Fest 2016 in the spirit of Christmas, at the Arcade, Independence Square, last week.
The Premier called upon people of all faith to collaborate with the government in its efforts to restore peace and harmony in the country.
He said, we must put the past aside and journey together in the spirit of peace and joy, which was heralded with the birth of Jesus Christ. Let there be peace in the world, and in this country.
“What gives me pleasure and makes this country unique, is to see all religious dignitaries on one stage. There is no difference, be it Vesak, Thai Pongal, Ramadan or Christmas. Everyone joins in each others’ religious celebrations. We may speak different languages, but we are one, as we respect each”, the Premier said.
He said, “We have won peace through much suffering. We must now focus on a new beginning. May the New Year bring peace and prosperity to all”.
Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith, the guest of honour at the occasion urged the government to build lasting peace in the country.
‘There should be an end to an ‘exclusive mindset’. Everyone should be included in the life fabric of society. We should move out from our zones and reach out to all. Co-existence among all groups and religions is vital to restore peace and harmony in the country”, the Cardinal said.
He said, the government is taking steps to find solutions to the problems in the country. Let us shed all differences and join in the government’s effort to bring about equality, justice, and strengthen relations with all communities.
“Let us stretch out to all with affection. It is only then that true peace can be achieved”, the Cardinal said.
