Audio recording of Court proceedings

20 November, 2016

Equipment for the audio recording of court procedures will be installed in 30 Lower Courts within the Colombo judicial zone, according to Minister of Justice, Wijeyadasa Rajapakse. This will be launched under a pilot project carried out by Ministry of Justice and the Judicial Services Commission.

“Depending on the success of the project, it will be expanded island-wide,” the Minister told the Sunday Observer.

The automatic recording of proceeding will be in audio format while the case records will be issued to the parties in document format, the same day.

Several measures have been taken during past several months to speed up the court process to provide an efficient and quality service in the legal system. Recording of proceedings is the next step, according to the Secretary of the Justice Ministry, Padmasiri Jayamanne.

“We hope to implement it in the first quarter of next year. It all depends on the time taken for procurement. As a first step, we hope to record the daily proceedings of the Courts and issue copies of the recordings to the parties on the same day.”
