23 October, 2016

The exhumed body of ex-Sergeant Major Edirisinghe Jayamanne who committed suicide after leaving a suicide note claiming responsibility for Lasantha Wickrematunga murder, will be subjected to another post-mortem by a three-member medical board headed by the Colombo Chief Judicial Medical Officer on a request made by the CID, officials close to the investigation team told the Sunday Observer. The fresh post-mortem will be conducted by Colombo Chief Judicial Medical Officer Dr.Ajith Tennakone, Senior Lecturer of the Colombo University Dr. Jean Perera and JMO of the Kegalle hospital Dr. Ramesh Alagiyawanna following a request made by the CID to the Mount Lavinia Magistrate Court where Wickrematunge’s case is being heard.

The body of Edirisinghe Jayammane was exhumed on October 19 on a request made by the CID to the Mount Lavinia Magistrate for further investigation and is now lying at the morgue of the Kegalle General Hospital.

The body was exhumed to take finger and palm prints to see whether the finger prints found on the vehicle of Wickrematunge at the time of his death tallied with Jayamanne’s finger prints. The CID on October 20 made a request to the Mount Lavinia Magistrate to conduct a fresh inquest into his death.

The CID teams conducting investigations into the authenticity of the suicide note left by Jayamanne are now conducting investigations to find out whether he had any links to Wickrematunge’s murder.

According to officers close to the investigation, the house of Edirisinghe Jayamanne had also been searched.

“Officials are also conducting investigations on the places he had visited days before he committed suicide and the telephone conversations he had had, to ascertain whether there was any other reason behind his suicide or whether someone had forced him to do so,” sources said.

It is reliably learnt that the CID investigating the telephone calls Jayamanne had made before his death, hope to record a statement from the a powerful politician and also from a senior military intelligence official.
