Electricity is a very important source. It is used in our day-to-day life. Without electricity, we can’t do our work. Electricity is used in many countries. It came to Sri Lanka about 55 years ago.
The uses of electricity are many. It gives us light, the energy to cook, to bathe, to wash clothes or dishes and also for agriculture and industry.
There are many electrical appliances such as lights, fans, cookers, refrigerators, washing machines, and ATMs.
Electricity is produced by charcoal, by water, by wind, by the sun and solar panels. The place where electricity is produced is known as a power station. There are some power stations in Sri Lanka and among them are Norochcholai, Kelanitissa and Lakshapana power stations.
Water is used at the Lakshapana power station and charcoal is used by the Norochcholai power station for electricity generation.
We have to save electricity because it’s a limited source. But some people don’t save electricity.
Some tips to save electricity:
Switch off lights and fans when not in use. Don’t overcharge your phones. Use energy saving bulbs. Wash your clothes at the same time.
There are some harmful effects caused by electricity such as electric shocks. Some tips to be aware of these harmful effects. Wear rubber slippers when using electricity. Don’t touch switches with wet hands. Use a wooden ladder when you’re repairing wires in high places. I request people to save electricity.
