
The elephant is a mammal. It has four large legs like mortars and its ears are like winnowing fans. It has a thick skin. It’s long nose is called a trunk. But the elephant has small eyes.
The male is called a bull, the female a cow and the baby is called a calf. It eats fruits, leaves and yams. Sri Lanka is famous for elephants.
Elephants can be tamed. The man who looks after an elephant is called a mahout.
The elephant helps us to carry heavy logs and long ago our kings used elephants in wars. At the Kandy Esala Perahera the elephants are dressed in beautiful, shining clothes and they walk proudly on the street.
Tourists come to Sri Lanka especially to see elephants. There is an elephant orphanage at Pinnawala. We must protect our elephants. The elephant is herbivorous.
