Mahadenamuttha solves a farmer’s problem

2 January, 2022

Everyone thought that Mahadenamuttha was very wise and came to him to get their problems solved. This is how he solved a problem for a farmer.

During the time of Mahadenamuttha, almost everyone lived by farming. Many cultivated paddy in fields and it was backbreaking work.

Nagula and poruva

The fields had to be tilled and this was done by harnessing a pair of buffaloes to a plough called a nagula. This was to make the fields muddy.

Then, the farmers tilled their fields again to level the field using a bigger plough known as the poruva. After this , there is a third tilling to level the field again and this done by hand using an ath or hand poruva.

Now, the field is ready for the paddy to be sown.

A farmer generally carries a basket of seed paddy (biththara vee) in his left hand and sows the seed paddy with his right hand.

As the farmers walked back and forth in their fields they left their footprints in the mud causing some seeds to go down in the mud.

In this way, a certain anount of seed paddy was lost.

One farmer wondered if there was a way to stop the paddy being lost in this way. He thought perhaps there must be a way.

Mahadenamuttha

The farmer went to Mahadenamuttha and related his problem to him.

“Oh, that is not a problem. I can solve it very easily.

Just tell me when your field is ready for sowing” said, Mahadenamuttha. When his field was ready for sowing the farmer informed Mahadenamuttha and he came to the paddy field.

He was accompanied by his five pupils or golayas, Rabbada Aiya, Pol Ba Muna, Kotu Kiththaiya, Rabbada Aiya, and Indikatu Pancha.

Mahadenamuttha asked his golayas to cut a bamboo tree and bring it to him.

Stretcher

When they brought it he got them to make a stretcher from the bamboo pieces. Then he asked Rabbada Aiya to sit on the stretcher with the basket of seed paddy.

He ordered the other four golayas to carry the stretcher and get on to field.

Now, four men carried the stretcher on which sat Rabbada Aiya sowing seeds.

In this manner, Mahadenamuttha prevented the paddy sower from leaving his footprints in the field.

But there were eight footprints in the field now.

But did Mahadenamuttha realise it?

No, he did not!
