The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH presented a Toyota Land-Cruiser V8 to the Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWC) last week to enhance environmental management activities in the Wilpattu National Park.
Country Director of GIZ Sri Lanka and Maldives, Ms. Christiane Einfeldt presented the keys of the vehicle to Deputy Director of the Department of Wildlife Conservation, Ranjan Marasinghe at the GIZ Country Office.
“Mobility is one of the major obstacles to implement conservation, outreach and environmental education activities in the Wilpattu National Park and influence zones. This vehicle will be very useful to implement the Environmental and Outreach Program efficiently in the Wilpattu National Park,” said Deputy Director Ranjan Marasinghe.
The ‘Management of Wilpattu and Influence Zone Management’ project is implemented by the Department of Wildlife Conservation and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, on behalf of the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
The project combines the conservation efforts within the Park with the sustainable development of its influence zones. The project aims to improve the Park’s management capacity with emphasis on operations, environmental and visitor use programs, in support of the Wilpattu National Park Management Plan (2019-2024).
Additional Secretary Vernon Perera and Director Deepal Siribaddana of the Ministry of Environment and Wildlife Resources expressed their support for the project.
Ms. Chandani Wilson of the Department of Wildlife Conservation and Wilpattu National Park Warden Chamath Lakshman were also present.
