'Why? Saama'- Puppetry at the British Council Colombo

28 April, 2019

‘Why? Saama’ – Puppetry was held at the British Council in Colombo recently.

The British Council celebrated International Women’s Day, International Book Day and World Puppet Day with the tallest female puppet in Sri Lanka. The puppetry performance was held on Saturday, 23 March 2019 at the British Council in Colombo.

Children, parents and their families together with staff of the British Council had an opportunity to see ‘Why? Saama’ Little Girl Giant Puppetry at the British Council in Colombo.

The story revolves around a little girl who loves to ask questions! At home, in school, on the road – wherever she goes, she finds questions for her ever-growing collection. From the simple to the profound, Saama’s questions bring to light many social norms, and challenges the adults around her to question the value of the standards we impose on children growing up in Sri Lanka today.

Performed by finger, hand and giant puppets accompanied by original live music, ‘Why?Saama’ aims to generate an important dialogue around the issues of gender, self-confidence and courage to face your own fears, and grow into your full giant potential with brief translations in English and Tamil.
