Vijayakala’s controversial speech : Investigation extracts under AG’s Dept. scrutiny

The Attorney General’s Department is now studying the extracts of the investigation conducted by the Police Organized Crime Prevention Division in to the recent controversial speech made by former Minister Vijayakala Maheswaran which made references to the LTTE, prior to deciding on further action.

According to Attorney General Jayantha Jayasuriya an officer of the Department has been allocated under the supervision of Solicitor General to study the information submitted by the Police.

“We received the documents from the Organized Crime Division of the Police only last Friday. We have to study it thoroughly before taking any further action” he said adding that the Solicitor General will then make the necessary recommendations.

According to sources from the Department, they would either direct to commence criminal proceedings and prosecution or advise the police to conduct further investigations on stipulated lines. “We could also decide to terminate any criminal action depending on the information received” a senior official from the Attorney General’s Department said.

Addressing a state event held in Jaffna on July 2, former State Minister Vijayakala Maheswaran had made a statement similar to that the LTTE should be revived to stand for the freedom of the Tamil people. Vijayakala Maheswaran immediately resigned from her State Minister portfolio following outrage over the speech.
