The father of free education

Dr. C.W.W. Kannangara is known as the father of free education. He was born on the 13th of October 1884 in the village of Randomba and named Christoper William Wijekoon Kannangara. He lost his mother at the age of six. His stepmother treated him well. He had his primary education at the Randomba Wesley Missionary Shool. When he was 14 years old, he got a scholarship to Richmond College, Galle. In 1910 he commenced work as a lawyer and was involved in education and politics. He became a member of the State Council and represented the Galle district. He initiated the free education scheme for children when he was Minister of Education.
