Vesak festival

4 February, 2018

Vesak is a religious and cultural festival in Sri Lanka. It is celebrated on the day of the full moon in the month of May. Vesak is one of the most important festivals for Buddhists and it is celebrated all over the world. On this day, Buddhists commemorate the important events that took place in the life of Lord Buddha. Apart from Sri Lanka, many Asian countries including India, Japan and Taiwan celebrate Vesak. In Sri Lanka, many religious activities such as sil campaigns, bodhi pujas, dansals, singing devotional songs and erecting pandals and lanterns are organised during this period. Many temples all over the country are filled with devotees and pilgrims during Vesak. Buddhists worship by offering flowers, lighting lamps and burning incense. These traditional observances have value because they satisfy the religious and emotional needs of the people.
