Second Prize

A book I read recently was Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone which is the first in the Harry Potter series. It is written by the award winning author J.K. Rowling and was first published in 1997 by Bloomsbury. The main character is Harry Potter, who along with his friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger go to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Harry lives with his abusive aunt and uncle because his parents were killed by the evil wizard Voldemort. Harry is asked to join Hogwarts School by the giant Rubeus Hagrid. At Hogwarts, Harry, Ron and Hermione find a trap door guarded by a beast and realize that the Philosopher’s stone is hidden there and Voldemort is going to try to come back to power by using it. But Harry manages to take the stone before Voldemort does, and he is the hero of the novel. I like this book because it reveals Harry’s courage and bravery, and it is magical and exciting.
