Sri Lanka Inventors Commission is planning to formulate a media policy on promoting and establishing an innovative culture in Sri Lanka.
“We have a strong need to establish a media policy and this will go well with the new inventors where their innovations will be recognized by the public,” Sri Lanka Inventors Commission (SLIC) Commissioner Dr. Mahesh Edirisinghe said.
“We have seen in some instances that due publicity is not given to the inventors though they bring glory to the country.
The media has a key role to play and they need to support the aspiring inventors,” he said.
We have observed that over the years media has failed to project the inventors in a positive manner as they give priority for different kind of stories.
However, the media should be mindful of giving publicity to the inventors after they obtain the patent, he said.
The answer to the question of whether there should be a culture of innovation is yes and we will lay the ground work for the new inventors to find the market, Dr. Edirisinghe said.
“We need inventors to take the country forward and invention and innovation are the key to the transition from low income country to the middle income country. H0owever, our culture does not support inventions,” he said.
