Collective effort vital to emerge from crisis

17 April, 2022

Protest is a statement or action expressing disapproval of or objection to something. According to the Constitution, we all have the freedom of peaceful assembly.

A person enters into a protest when injustice is done to himself or his group. But that struggle must not be the pursuit of the personal goals of another party or group. While one group claims to have actually embarrassed themselves, others seem to be shouting for their political agenda. Others call for the removal of the leader. But what needs to be done is to protect the leader and get his attention to their demands. If the leader is weakened, the country will inevitably fall prey to other foreign agendas. We have examples in history of that too.

From 1815, the Sinhala Nilames, deceived by the English, betrayed the last Sinhalese king, Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe, for their interests. As a result, from 1818, Ceylon became an English colony. In the Uva-Wellassa struggle, the militants died as patriots, but the white imperialists could not be driven out. Therefore, what needs to be done at this moment is for all Sri Lankans to collectively find a way out of this predicament.

The country’s dollar shortage has been a major factor in fuel, gas, electricity, food, and other economic crises. This crisis has escalated into a political crisis in the country today. As a country rich in human capital, it must reap the maximum benefits at this juncture. There are many unemployed graduates in the country. It’s a huge asset to a country. Such resources can be used to develop the country without having to go abroad.

Entrepreneurial skills

Train these people in entrepreneurial skills and devise ways to get Dollars for the country.

Let’s unite the country and rebuild it as entrepreneurs. If the main reason for the crisis is the shortage of Dollars, it should be the responsibility of the country’s younger generation to embark on a path to earn Dollars. But what happens is what should not happen. That is, the struggles, protests, agitations, and strikes that have taken place in the country.

Therefore, obstacles are being encountered day by day to overcome those economic crises. But on the one hand, the people’s struggles have so far shown some positive victories. A new Governor of the Central Bank, a Secretary to the Ministry of Finance, and a Minister of Finance have been appointed. Despite the struggles, many are responding well to the appointments. It can be cited as a successful outcome of the protest.

Sri Lanka’s tourism industry, which suffered a major setback in the wake of the Easter Sunday attacks and the global catastrophe, has been hit hardest by the country’s current crisis. On the other hand, the export economy is collapsing as never before. The decline in foreign labour contributions is likely to have a further impact on the country’s economy.

New ideas and suggestions

The main objective of the country should be to manage the crisis by preparing the initial steps to bring Dollars to Sri Lanka and not to create more crises. Because the majority of the protesters are young people, we can use their new ideas and suggestions to help rebuild the country.

It would also be better if the authorities listened to the views and suggestions of the youth and rectified the shortcomings, making the country prosperous.

On the one hand, the crisis can be traced back to those who are struggling from abroad to stop sending money to the country through the “Undial” system and send money the right way. On the other hand, those who are struggling should take action to bring the country a possible program to attract tourists to the country.

Celebrities such as actors and singers can take the main responsibility for bringing tourists to re-boost the economy. This is the role that young entrepreneurs who are struggling to play in reviving the export economy.

If all parties unite to overcome the economic crisis, it will be a victory beyond protests.

But that is not what happens. Various political interventions can also be seen in the protest. People who follow different parties and different political theories can be seen at the protest, and there can be various clashes between those people.

Respect for the clergy

As the country’s clergy intervene in these struggles, the respect for the clergy is disappearing from the people. The victory of the country is not found in fighting separately but in finding solutions together.

We have gained a lot from the struggles we have had throughout history. As a democratic country, the struggle is by no means wrong because we are free to fight for the rights and demands of the people.

The main thing that we have to do is to get out of the economic crisis in the country. Not to insult Sri Lanka in front of the world.

Over the years, Sri Lanka has risen to prominence as a country facing many ups and downs. If so, it is the responsibility of the younger generation of the country to do something useful to uplift the reputation of the country, the name of Sri Lanka.

Let’s save the country first, overcome the economic crisis second, and change the system second.
