The corona pandemic had its salutary effect as well, when scientists and ordinary people (some of whom have never attended school), have pioneered new scientific creations. Venura Wijesekera, a mathematics stream student of Trinity College, Kandy has after many experiments, created a Wireless Stethoscope to help doctors to examine suspected Covid-19 patients from a distance of ten metres without being afflicted by the deadly virus.
Experiments
“My father is an engineer. My mother was a doctor, she died prematurely. The impact of my mother’s untimely death prompted me to conduct experiments. With my ‘Wireless Stethoscope’, doctors can check the functioning of a person’s lungs and heartbeat from a distance of 10 metres, thereby avoiding direct contact with patients.
It is possible to examine a patient with this wireless stethoscope even from a distance of one kilometre, Venura said.
New creations
Steps are being taken to further improve my new creation he said. President Gotabaya Rajapaksa promised to help me to obtain a patent for it.Earlier, Venura had converted a desktop computer into a portable one operated by battery and it weighs only four kilograms. At present, he is experimenting on a bullet-proof jacket. With GPS technology, data on the functioning of the heart, oxygen level of the body and the body temperature of an accident victim wearing this jacket could be obtained from a distant location, he said.
The Most Ven.Niyangoda Sri Vijithasiri Nayaka Thera of the Malwathu Chapter was instrumental in providing an opportunity for Venura to present his new invention to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
