The influence of celebritIEs on youth

22 April, 2018

Celebrities are everywhere and whether you realize it or not, their attractive lifestyles and culture and their powerful impact on a person’s life can easily influence young minds, their beliefs, interests, behaviour and their fashion trends.

What makes someone a celebrity is his ability to gain attention. How celebrities are portrayed in the media reflects how they are viewed by society. If you have ever been on a celebrity’s social media site you would have probably noticed the number of fans or followers they have whether that be a thousand or a million they are still broadcasting to a large group of people. Their lives are constantly documented so they have great power to easily change the way people live their lives. The obsession with celebrity culture starts at an early age. Many children and teens are influenced with young pop-culture icons. They think of celebrities as role models and choose to imitate them.

Starting at a young age, they look to celebrities for many different reasons. Celebrities are almost an unavoidable part of our lives while growing up. Since most youth look at these individuals in a different and more powerful way, they feel the need to be just like them. For girls, it’s usually for the beauty, the extravagant styles and make up that famous women use and for boys, it’s the muscles and keen fashion sense of famous men that they aspire to have. In society today being good looking is how someone defines you. If all you see is how great everyone else looks, it is obviously going to affect the way you look at yourself. Celebrities shape and influence fashion trends and fashion choices of the youth because celebrities signify ideal beauty. Youth always want to know more and see more. Beauty secrets revealed by celebrities are a big deal. They have a major influence on style. Youngsters strive to keep up with the latest fashion trends and celebrities happen to be one of the highest influence of modern fashion. Style is always changing and youth need to make sure they are always up to date with it. Young people strive to look their best so they look to celebrities.

Most wide spread clothing trends are first seen when celebrities wear them. Young people get their inspiration from people who they look up to and who they desire to be like. Social media and television play a huge role in how celebrities influence the youth. There are shows dedicated to fashion where the hosts comment on celebrity fashion and critique styles that they don’t like. Most often young fans go by the comments or the endorsements given by their favourite celebrity on famous brands and designer wear. Although they sometimes wish to look like their favourite celebrity, they might not be able to afford the designer clothes that their favourite celebrity wears, but they make sure to get cheaper clothing driven by the celebrity’s style

Youngsters most often get carried away merely looking at the pictures of celebrities. The flawless skin and perfect body image of these celebrities impress them so much that they sometimes look down on themselves. What these young ones don’t realize is how much these so-called celebrities go through. Some celebrities go through extreme measures to look the way they do. They may get plastic surgery and have eating disorders etc. Most of the time all that we see is what someone looks like and not what they have gone through. So, thinking someone has a perfect life isn’t so accurate.

Famous people have always shaped fashion trends throughout history and this is still true today. Fashion trends are catching on faster than in older generations due to the rise of social media. Celebrity fads come and go so fast. So, they are easy to fall behind on. Fads are absurd as “how thick or thin your eyebrows should be”. Thick eyebrows are back in style now. Young girls are filling in their eyebrows with eyebrow pencils to make them appear thicker because that is what almost every celebrity is doing now.

While youth strive to keep up with the latest fashion trends and celebrities happen to be one of the highest influences of modern fashion,it appears that celebrities look amazing everywhere they go whether it be a grocery store or a red-carpet event.

One example is Miley Cyrus. She inspires young girls although she isn’t necessarily the greatest inspiration for youth. Her sense of fashion and hairstyles are spunky and fun. So that’s the reason she appeals to young girls. The other is Rihanna Diamonds. Girls are inspired by her side shaved hair. Famous women with edgy scandalous styles inspire the young to try new things and to be creative with their styles.

Sometimes celebrities are a public menace when they become a negative influence on youth. On the other hand, there are celebrities who inspire the young in a positive manner.

Jennifer Garner, one of Hollywood’s great and beautiful celebrities has always been simple and tried not to show her huge financial power. Instead, she often visits mass-market stores along with her children and purchases products in a perfectly ordinary market, just like any simple American housewife.

Russell Crowe should be followed if you want to develop a simple lifestyle. He is one of America’s famous actors, who refused to accept the chance to live in a beautiful la mansion and moved to Australia with his family where he bought a ranch along with a simple jeep. Instead of being surrounded by high-end brands fashionable clothes or most expensive cars, he is now surrounded by a big green field and lots of beautiful horses.

The founder of IKEA, Ingvar Kamprad promoted simplicity for many years. He bought inexpensive products and clothes only when there were sales. He used an old Volvo for the last 15 years, and chooses to fly in economy class. He used furniture from his own stores to furnish his house. He’s considered to be one of the most modest billionaires in the entire world. Ingvar died of pneumonia at his home in Smaland, Sweden, on 27 January 2018 at the age of 91.

While it is almost impossible to completely remove any negative celebrity influences from your life you can lessen the effects of celebrities and media by seeking out positive role models in real life who you can aspire to be like. Try to find people who exhibit qualities you would like to have, such as honesty, optimism and perseverance.

It can also be helpful to try to take the focus off your appearance as much as possible. Remember that you are not defined by what you like.

What really makes up a person is how they act and treat other people.
