SLT-Mobitel conducts environment awareness program

Parallel to Environment Week, SLT-Mobitel partnered with Lanka Nature Conservationists (LNC) to conduct an environment awareness program recently with sessions titled ‘Protection and Enrichment of the Last Remaining Sea Turtle Nesting Habitats in South Colombo Coastline’ and ‘Solutions to Plastic Pollutions in Colombo’.

SLT-Mobitel has conducted similar programs as an online program over the past two years, building awareness on pressing environmental issues. This program  was held at the Navy Headquarters auditorium, Colombo. 

It addressed various topics related to coastal conservation and environmental issues.  General Manager, Marketing Services, SLT, Anuruddha Suriyaarachchi and  President, LNC, Samantha Gunasekara emphasised the importance of undertaking environmental initiatives.

A panel also addressed the gathering on conservation and the promotion of sustainable initiatives. The speakers included Director, Coastal Resource Management, Coast Conservation Department, W.A.N.S. Rajaratna who outlinedSri Lankan experiences relating to coastal conservation and environmental issues. 

Senior Professor at Wayamba University of Sri Lanka and Chair of the National Expert Committee on Mangrove Conservation and Sustainable Use, Prof. Sevvandi Jayakody explored the meaningful restoration of coastal areas and the role of native plants.

Prof. Terney Pradeep Kumara from the University of Ruhuna discussed the issues of plastic pollution in coastal areas and the responsibility of the general public.

Senior Veterinary Doctor at the Department of Wildlife Conservation,Dr. Suhada Jayawardana shed light on common injuries faced by sea turtles and possible interventions. The programme concluded with a panel discussion and feedback activity, fostering an interactive exchange of ideas. 

Navy Commander Vice Admiral Priyantha Perera, Deputy Chief of Staff of Navy, Rear Admiral Pradeep Rathnayake, officials of SLT-Mobitel, LNC, Navy, Police and other government departments and officials of  the hotel sector were present.
