Vinuka Wijeratne, a talented student from Royal College clinched the gold medal in the Under-11 Open category with an impressive score of 5.5/7 at the Asian Schools Rapid Chess Championship 2023 organised by the Uzbekistan Chess Federation.
The tournament featured separate categories for Under-7, 9, 11, 13, 15 and 17 divisions.
Wijeratne emerged as the champion in the highly competitive Under-11 Open category and was one of five players to achieve the same impressive score of 5.5/7 points leading to an intense battle for the top spot.
However with a superior tiebreak Wijeratne claimed a well-deserved gold medal while Shakhzod Islamov of Uzbekistan and Suleyman Akhmet of Kazakhstan secured the first and second runners-up positions respectively. (YK)
