MC workers found bullet casings while clearing garbage at Army camp

Two Kandy Municipal Council (MC) workers arrested after Police found 32 empty T-56 ammunition casings in their garbage lorry near the Sri Dalada Maligawa has told the Police they found the empty ammunition casings while clearing garbage at the Army camp located at Yatinuwara Veediya, Kandy.

They have confessed that they took the bullet casings with the intention of selling them.

Police on Sunday found 32 empty ammunition casings used for T-56 firearms in a garbage truck belonging to the Kandy Municipal Council which proceeded along Raja Veediya to enter the Sri Dalada Maligawa premises.

Empty ammunition casings were found during an inspection carried out by the officers at the Police checkpoint set up at Raja Veediya in the vicinity of Dalada Maligawa. The driver and assistant of the lorry were arrested by the Police.

Investigations have revealed that this lorry belonging to the Kandy Municipal Council is parked daily in the Sri Dalada Maligawa premises to collect garbage for safety reasons and after collecting the garbage at the Dalada Maligawa premises in the morning, it leaves to collect garbage in the city.

After disposing of the garbage, the lorry is cleaned and it is brought back to the Dalada Maligawa. The Police had found the bullet casings when the lorry was brought back to the Dalada Maligawa premises.

Police have recorded statements from the Commanding Officer and several soldiers in the camp regarding the incident.
