No political meetings, musical shows in Galle Face from April 20

19 April, 2023

The Cabinet has decided to reserve the Galle Face Green for the public to spend time freely and only for special religious activities. Cabinet Spokesman, Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardena said that after April 20, the Galle Face Green will not be allowed for political meetings and musical shows.

The Cabinet Spokesman said this while attending the press conference to inform the Cabinet decisions held at the Government Information Department yesterday (18).

Minister Dr. Gunawardena said that the Galle Face Green used to be a place where people could spend time with their families.”

Due to the music shows and fights that happened last season, this place has been damaged a lot.

For this reason, the Sri Lanka Ports Authority has undertaken to develop the Galle Face Green as a social responsibility project.

The authority is going to spend about Rs.220 million rupees for this.

Rs 6.6 million has been spent only for repairing the property damage that had occurred in the area during the agitations last year. Accordingly, after April 20, the Cabinet approved the proposal to allow the Galle Face Green to the public for free time and only for special religious activities. The Minister further stated that musical performances that damage or may damage the beauty of the Galle Face will not be allowed to be held in that area for political meetings or other activities from April 20.
