Billionaire Onesh Subasinghe murder: wife’s plot comes to light

26 February, 2023

Authorities are still in the process of unravelling the mystery behind the killing of Sri Lankan billionaire and owner of Opex Holdings Onesh Subasinghe. All evidence currently points to his wife and her female companion accused of plotting his death while in Sri Lanka and allegedly carrying out the plan once they travelled to Indonesia.

Indonesian authorities are yet to inform local law enforcement agencies on the manner of Subasinghe’s death. But investigations by the CID revealed that his wife and her companion along with Subasinghe’s four-year-old daughter had fled to Doha, Qatar but only remained there for two days before heading to Brazil. It is believed they are still in that country.

The CID commenced an investigation on the death on the instructions of the IGP, based on a request by Subasinghe’s family. The investigators have since visited Subasinghe’s luxurious home at Rosmead Place. Subasinghe had married Brazilian national Rosalia after meeting her while on a trip to Brazil in 2018.

Their daughter Aleesha was studying at a leading international school in Borella when the tragic incident took place. It is said Subasinghe deeply loved and cared for his daughter, hiring several staffers to ensure her care.

The CID has since questioned the staff. According to one domestic identified as Pushparani, Rosalia had started changing one year after Aleesha’s birth. “Rosalia always fought claiming she is not being taken care of despite his efforts to provide her with everything she asked for,” she told the CID, providing evidence to a severe rift between the couple. Another domestic backed up Pushparani’s claims. She told the CID, Rosalia often threatened to return to Brazil and claimed she cannot live in Sri Lanka. “She often fought with him.

Once he called me and said she is trying to take Aleesha and leave for Brazil. He also said she had threatened to kill him,” she said. The domestics said Subasinghe had even instructed them to be watchful and prevent any attempt by Rosalia to flee to Brazil with Aleesha. They said she had made several threats to end Subasinghe’s life and insisted she be allowed to visit Brazil. However, Subasinghe is said to have been holding on to her passport by force.

Subasinghe’s family told investigators that he had plans to divorce Rosalia but was unaware if Rosalia knew of this. It was during this time her companion, now believed to be a close confidant of Rosalia’s, who arrived from Brazil. Rosalia had insisted on the trip to Indonesia and seemed to have changed after her friend’s arrival. Despite his busy schedule, Subasinghe had given in and the group had left for Indonesia on January 19.

Investigators now believe this plan was hatched by Rosalia in order to obtain her passport which was in Subasinghe’s possession. There is also evidence that Rosalia with the help of her friend had attempted to flee Sri Lanka four months before Subasinghe’s killing, but failed.

But why the duo resorted to killing Subasinghe in Indonesia instead of secretly leaving for Brazil remains unknown. The CID is now attempting to obtain a red notice on Rosalia through Interpol in a bid to nab her. A team from the CID is also set to travel to Indonesia shortly to obtain the support of the Indonesian law enforcement authorities.
