Oshini wins chess prize

Oshini Gunawardena, a promising player emerged champion at the 4th Sri Lanka Chess Youth Grand Prix which concluded at the CFSL headquarters in Colombo organized by the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka.

According to the president of the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka (CFSL) Luxman Wijesuriya, this event was held as a stage level Grand Prix. In the initial stage 32 youth players contested in three groups in round robin format.

After the initial group level, the top seven players from group A, the top five players from group B and the top four players were selected for the pre-quarterfinals. From that eight players qualified for the quarter-finals.

Oshini Gunawardena and Sanuk Nanayakkara competed for the championship in the final.

Nanayakkara had to settle for the first runner-up position while Vinuka Dihain Wijerathna and DCBK Seneviratne battled for the second runner-up position.

Seneviratne won the match.
