Two killed, three missing and 125,000 affected

At least two people were killed, three reported missing and more than 125,000 affected as inclement weather swept through several parts of the country during the week, a senior official with the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said yesterday.

The deaths were reported from Kegalle and Mutur while the single largest number of those affected 21, 683 were from the Western Province, Director DMC Pradeep Koddippili told the Sunday Observer.

Several open water bodies were also taking in more water and was on the rise, he said.

They included Attanagalu Oya, Nilwala Ganga, Ging Ganga, Kuda Ganga, Magura Ganga, Kalu Ganga and the Kelani Ganga while minor floods were reported from Holumbuwa, Millakanda and Dunamale, he said.

The National Building Research Organisation issued for early landslide warnings for six districts including Colombo, Galle, Kalutara, Kegalle, Nuwara-Eliya and Ratnapura.

Officials the Department of Meteorology yesterday warned of more rains in the coming days and urged the public to take adequate protection against lightning.
