76th UNP Convention on Sept. 6

The United National Party’s (UNP) 76th Convention will be held on September 6 at the Sugathadasa Stadium, Colombo on the theme Ekwemu (Let’s Unite). The Convention will be held under the patronage of UNP Leader and President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

The UNP will hold this year’s Convention under a President of the party after 28 years. The last time the UNP held an annual Convention under a UNP President was in 1993.

The UNP Convention is being organised by a committee headed by Deputy Leader Ruwan Wijewardene. Religious ceremonies are also scheduled to be held in all constituencies today (September 4) across the country in connection with the Convention.

The UNP was founded on September 6, 1946 under the leadership of D.S. Senanayake, who later became the first Prime Minister of the country. During the past 76 years, the party has represented the Government and the Opposition.
