‘Gentle giant’ Mac: A feared short corner specialist

Popularly known as a ‘gentle giant’, AJ McIntyre was a feared short corner specialist. A brilliant right back, Mac was a tower of strength both for Ceylon and the Old Bens who dominated the hockey scene from the mid-sixties to the mid-seventies. He represented the Colombo HA at the National Championships in 1964 and 1965 and Mercantile HA from 1969 to 1971. He was captain in 1972, playing in the winning teams in 1969 and 1970.

F Assisi

F Assisi was one of the quietest on the field but initiated many uncanny moves which resulted in heaps of goals for the Old Bens.

He represented the Colombo HA at the National Championships in 1965, and winning teams of 1966 and 1967 and the Mercantile HA from 1969 to 1974. Captaining in 1973, he played in the 1969/70 winning teams.

Raja Jayasuriya

Raja Jayasuriya represented the Colombo HA at the 1966 National Championships who were joint champions and the Nationalised Services HA from 1962 to 1965, and 1967 to 1972.

Tissa Ettipola

Tissa Ettipola was an aggressive left inside with deft stick work.

He represented the Colombo HA at the National Championships in 1967 where they were joint champions with Matale HA and the Mercantile HA from 1969 to 1972, playing in the winning teams of 1969 and 1970.
