Visakha past pupils’ drive for cleaner coastlines

24 April, 2022

The Old Girls’ Association of Visakha Vidyalaya, Colombo (VVOGA) organised a beach cleanup at the Dehiwala-Mt. Lavinia beach covering 2.5 kilometres recently. This was one of the main projects organised by the VVOGA under its ‘Go Green’ initiative.

Wana Arana and Clean Ocean Force partnered with VVOGA to make this event a success. The other event partners were Lassana Werala, Marine Environmental Protection Authority, Central Environmental Authority, Waste Management Authority, Dehiwala-Mt. Lavinia Municipal Council, Sri Lanka Navy, and Sri Lanka Police.

Over 150 VVOGA members, volunteers from the Clean Ocean Force, Wana Arana, Navy and Police participated.

The aim of the program was to create awareness among the VVOGA membership and the public at large on the importance of protecting the coastline and marine ecosystem. Trash and debris flowing from the canals are directly taken to the sea resulting in the littering of the beaches due to ocean waves. Around 253 kg of such debris was collected by the participants and disposed of hygienically in an environment-friendly manner.

“We extend gratitude to all our sponsors as well as those who participated in this event. We especially thank Wana Arana and Clean Ocean Force for their guidance and support to create awareness among the public on this important environmental issue,” the VVOGA stated.

Oxford College of Business was the Gold Sponsor while the Bronze Sponsors were Hextar, DP Lanka Auto Mart, Build My Career, and Kalbe International.
